What is a certification vs certificate program?
A certificate program is a training program combined with an assessment. Successful participants in these programs receive a certificate, not a certification. A certification program is an exam that yields a certification to individuals who pass. Certification programs do not include a formal training component, although training may be used to prepare. For example, anyone who passes the California food handler course and test will get a California food handlers certificate. Anyone who passes the Food Protection Manager Certification Exam will get a food manager certification valid in California.
Do I need a California Food Handlers Card?
If you are a food handler in California, you are required to complete a food safety course that is approved for use in California. Completing an approved food handlers certificate course will award you with a California Food Handlers Card. A food handler is someone who handles, prepares, serves, sells, or gives away food for human consumption.
Is this food handlers card training and test approved for my area?
This training and test is approved for use throughout California. You’ll need to take a different course if you work in one of the following areas: Riverside County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County, and Siskiyou County.
Is this course equivalent to the ServSafe Food Handler California course?
Yes! This training and test has been ANSI accredited and approved by the state of California. It is legally equivalent to all other accredited, approved California food handler courses, including the one sold by ServSafe.
How do I reprint my food handlers card?
If you lost your current food handler card, you can reprint it by logging into your account. Find the Certificates window on your dashboard and locate your card. Click View Certificate and then Print.

If you need to reprint your current card, login and go to the My Certificates section on your Dashboard. From there, you can click View and print your Food Handler card or certificate for free.
Reorder Certificate
Some areas require an additional official documentation from your local health department. If you have lost the card you received from your state, county, or local health department, you will need to call that health department to obtain a new card, permit, or certificate.
