If you plan to serve alcohol in California, you must obtain Responsible Beverage Service certification. The process involves completing a state-accepted training course and passing an alcohol safety exam.

Who needs alcohol training?
This includes:

What are the steps to earn my California RBS certification?
- Register on the California RBS Portal Before you start your training, visit the RBS Portal to register as an alcohol server. Within the portal, you’ll submit your application and pay the $3 state application fee. Write down the Server ID Number found on your portal dashboard.
- Take the RBS course.Once you’re registered on the RBS Portal and have a Server ID Number, you can start your training. Register for the StateFoodSafety course, enter your Server ID and complete your training online.
- Take the state certification exam.Within 1-2 days of course completion, you’ll receive an email from the California ABC saying your state certification exam is ready. There is no additional fee to take the exam. Log in to the RBS Portal and take the online exam within 30 days of finishing your training. You have up to three chances to score 70% or better.
