Is the state exam included with your course?

No, the exam is a separate requirement that must be taken through the state’s RBS portal. The state’s mandatory $3 fee covers your RBS portal registration and exam.

What is the timeline for getting certified?

Once hired, you’ll have 60 days to complete the process. The exam must be taken within 30 days of finishing the course. Employers are also responsible for ensuring their staff meet these requirements.

If you don’t complete certification on time, you won’t be legally allowed to continue serving. That can lead to scheduling changes, disciplinary action or even job loss, depending on the situation.

What happens if I don't get certified?

Failing to obtain your certification within the allowed timeframe affects both you and your employer.

Businesses are required to ensure their staff members are properly trained. Allowing unqualified workers to continue serving alcohol can result in fines or disciplinary action. In some cases, it can even impact their ability to keep operating or result in the loss of their liquor license.

For employees, the consequences are more immediate. You may be taken off the schedule, reassigned to other duties or lose your job entirely.

This is why most employers emphasize completing certification as soon as possible after being hired. Waiting too long can limit your job opportunities or delay your start date.

How long does RBS certification last?

Your beverage server certificate remains valid for three years. After that, you'll need to complete the exam process again to stay eligible for work.

Keeping track of your expiration date is important. Letting your certification lapse can interrupt your ability to work and may require you to repeat the entire process.

We’ll send you periodic reminders as your certification’s expiration date approaches so you can renew in time. Some employers also send reminders, but ultimately, it’s your responsibility to stay current.

How do I renew my certification?

If your certificate ID Number has expired, you’ll need to purchase and retake the California Responsible Beverage Service training and successfully pass the state-administered exam.

Is the RBS certificate different from a food handler card?

Yes. An RBS certificate is required for employees who sell, serve or deliver alcoholic beverages in California. A food handler card is intended for employees who prepare, store or handle food. Depending on your job duties, you may need one or both credentials.

Do you offer the RBS course in other languages?

Yes. Our RBS training program is currently available in both English and Spanish.
