What is the Louisiana Responsible Vendor Program?

The Louisiana Responsible Vendor Program is a state program administered through the Louisiana ATC. It’s designed to educate alcohol vendors and their employees about responsible liquor sales and service. Employees who are required to participate must complete an approved training course and obtain a Responsible Vendor server permit, commonly called a Louisiana bar card.

Who needs a bar card?

Louisiana requires employees who sell or serve alcohol, or who deal with customers who purchase or consume alcohol, to obtain a Responsible Vendor permit within 45 days of starting employment.

The requirement applies to employees who sell or check IDs at both on-premises establishments, such as bars and restaurants, and off-premises establishments, such as liquor and convenience stores.

Do volunteers or special event staff need RV training?

It depends on the type of special event. Type C special events require all servers to complete a Responsible Vendor Certification course before the event. For Type A and Type B special events, the ATC strongly recommends that volunteers working in beverage operations complete Responsible Vendor training.

Are food handlers required to complete this course?

Responsible Vendor training is mandatory for Louisiana employees who sell or serve alcoholic beverages, including food service employees. Waiters and other food staff who serve alcohol need to obtain an RV permit in addition to any required food safety training.

What score do I need to pass the exam?

You must score at least 70% to pass. The exam contains 25 questions and has a 90-minute time limit. Unlike the course, the exam cannot be paused.

What happens if I fail the exam?

You have unlimited attempts to pass the final exam.

What do I get when I finish the Louisiana Responsible Vendor Training course?

After you complete the course and pass the exam, StateFoodSafety will issue you a temporary permit and report your completion to the Louisiana ATC. The ATC will send your official RV permit by email in approximately 10 to 15 business days.

How do I renew my credentials?

Every four years before your permit expires, you must retake the course and pass the exam to continue working in alcohol service.

Are employers responsible for paying training costs?

No. Employees are responsible for their own training costs. However, some employers may choose to cover training fees for their staff.

What happens if I lose my permit?

If you lose your card, you can request a new copy from the ATC by emailing ATCRV@atc.la.gov. Include your full name as it appeared on your previous card, your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Can I get a physical copy of my bar card?

The Louisiana ATC issues digital Responsible Vendor permits and does not mail physical cards. If your employer requires a physical permit, you can print your digital bar card.

What happens if my RV permit expires while I am still employed?

Louisiana law requires all employees who sell or serve alcoholic beverages to have valid permits. If your permit expires, you won’t be able to continue performing duties that require a valid bar card. There is no grace period. To resume alcohol-related duties, you must obtain a new permit by retaking an approved Responsible Vendor course and passing the test.

Is my LA bar card valid in other states?

No. The Louisiana RV Server permit is a state-specific credential. If you work in another state, check with your employer or the local agency responsible for alcohol-training requirements to determine whether separate training or certification is required.

What if I need a refund for my course?

You can request a refund within 30 days of purchase if you haven’t started the course or attempted the exam. Learn more about eligibility requirements in our refund policy.

Is there a bulk discount for employers?

Yes. StateFoodSafety offers discounts for group purchases. Employers can purchase training vouchers, assign them to employees, track employee progress and access employee certificates through the group purchase system.
