About Food Allergens Training

Every food worker and food manager should understand food allergens and how to prevent allergic food reactions. StateFoodSafety offers 100% online food allergy awareness training for anyone who prepares, handles or serves food to the public.

We make it easy to train anywhere using any device. You’ll learn how to protect diners from food allergens, avoid cross-contact contamination and prevent allergic food reactions and anaphylaxis (a particularly dangerous allergic reaction to food). Earn your food allergen certificate at your own pace with our ANAB-accredited Food Allergens Essentials course or a locally accepted program for your area.

The FDA Food Code 2022 2-103.11(O) requires designated Persons in Charge of food service operations to ensure all employees are properly trained in food safety, including food allergy awareness. While there is no legal requirement for formal food allergy training in many states, training food handlers in allergy awareness is still highly recommended.

Food Allergens Training FAQs

What is food allergens training?

A food allergens training course teaches food handlers and food managers basic information about food allergies and food sensitivities that can help save lives. It explains the most common types of food allergens, including milk, eggs, wheat, fish, shellfish and more.

StateFoodSafety’s courses provide basic food allergen training for food handlers, food managers and food workers of all kinds. Lessons educate you on the possibility of cross-contact and explain how to use uncontaminated ingredients with properly sanitized tools. You will learn how to communicate allergen hazards, respond to allergic reactions and more.

What is a food allergen?

Some people are sensitive to or allergic to certain kinds of food. Eating or being exposed to those foods might cause a variety of allergic reactions ranging from hives and skin irritation to life-threatening anaphylaxis. In the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that approximately 2% of adults and between 4% and 8% of children have a food allergy.

A food allergen is any type of food substance that can stimulate an allergic food reaction. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified a group of common allergens that are responsible for 90% of food allergy hospitalizations in the United States. Our food allergy awareness courses teach you what those allergens are and how to protect customers with food allergies against exposure to dangerous allergens.

Who would benefit from food allergen training?

If you handle, process, serve, sell or give away food for human consumption, you should take a food allergen safety training course. From dishwashers and waiters to head chefs and food managers, all food workers should be aware of food allergens, cross-contact contamination, the use of epinephrine and other important food allergy principles.

What do I get when I finish food allergy awareness training?

When you complete all course material and pass the final exam, you can immediately download and print your food allergen certificate. Your certificate will include the logo of the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) if you complete an ANAB-accredited program.
