Job Profile: Hosts and Hostesses

Friendly waiter server laughing smiling having fun with customer patron pretty modernHosts and hostesses work in restaurants and other dining places to seat customers, distribute menus, and manage reservations and waiting lists. Hosts and hostesses may also be expected to keep dining areas and restrooms clean and well-supplied. Because hosts and hostesses work so closely with customers, servers, and other restaurant staff, strong interpersonal skills are a must for these employees. Many hosts and hostesses work part-time, and their shifts may include hours during early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Like many hourly foodservice jobs, hosting positions do not require specific education or work experience; hosts and hostesses typically learn their skills through on-the-job training. On average, hosts and hostesses make $8.93 hourly. Job opportunities for hosts and hostesses are expected to grow by 12% over the next ten years.

Median Pay: $8.93 per hour

Required Education: Less than high school

Required Experience: None

Job Outlook: 12% growth (average)
