Most states require food workers to take food safety training and obtain a food handlers certificate. Even in areas that do not require a food handlers card, food safety training is highly recommended. Check with your employer or local health department to see if your area requires a food handlers card.

What do I get when I finish the course?

Upon course completion, you will be able to download and print your food handlers certificate immediately.

Are there any additional steps for getting a food handlers card?

Check with your local health department to see if there are any additional steps. In some locations, you will need to register your card with the county or provide your certificate to receive a county-issued food handlers card.

How do I renew my food handlers certificate?

If your certificate has expired, you will need to purchase and retake the StateFoodSafety food handlers training course for your area. If you need to reprint your current certificate, log in and go to the My Certificates section on your Dashboard. From there, you can click View and print your certificate.

How long can I access the course?

When you purchase a StateFoodSafety course, you automatically get one year of unlimited access to the training videos. Take your time through the course or come back after completion to brush up on your food safety knowledge!

What is a food handlers card?

A food handler card is a certificate, card or permit that shows you have completed a food safety course that is approved by your state and county, and that you understand the basics of food safety.

What's the difference between a food handlers card and a food handlers certificate?

The only difference is the size of your credential. A food handlers card is a convenient, wallet-sized version of your certificate. Cards and full-size certificates both serve as proof that you completed food safety training.

  2. Find the Certificates window on your dashboard.
  3. Locate the digital version of your certificate and click View Certificate.
  4. Select Print or Email.

Note: In some areas, you get your official Food Handler Certificate from the local health department. If you have lost the card you received from your state, county, or local health department, you will need to call that health department to obtain a new card, permit, or certificate.
