FAQs
When does California SB 476 take effect?
Starting January 1, 2024, employers must pay for employee food handler training, pay workers their standard wages during training, and relieve workers of all other regular duties while they train.
Does SB 476 change food handlers card requirements?
No. SB 476 simply shifts financial responsibility for food handler training from employees to employers. Within 30 days of hire, California food workers still must acquire a food handler card from an ANAB-accredited and state-approved training provider. Cards are still valid for three years.
What is a food handlers card?
A food handlers card is a certificate, card, or permit that shows workers have completed a food safety course that is approved by their state or county. This credential demonstrates that they understand the basics of food safety.
Is StateFoodSafety food handler training accepted statewide?
Yes! Our California food handler training program is ANAB-accredited and approved by the California Department of Public Health. We are the exclusive provider of locally approved training for Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and we offer a program approved by the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.
StateFoodSafety is the only training provider accepted statewide. No matter where in California you're located, we have an SB 476-compliant training program for you.
Who needs food handlers card training?
California requires most food workers to take food safety training and obtain a food handlers certificate. Local health departments may also have specific training requirements.
While food employees at certain locations are exempt from food handler training, the state requires the majority of employees who handle or prepare food to earn a food handlers card within 30 days of starting work.
Training is typically required for workers who handle unpackaged food, food equipment, utensils, or food-contact surfaces. A complete list of food handler training exemptions can be found in SB 476.
Are there any additional steps for getting a food handlers card?
Check with your local health department to see if there are any additional steps. In some locations, workers will need to register their card with the county or provide the certificate to receive a county-issued food handlers card.
What do employees get upon course completion?
Upon course completion, employees can download and print their food handlers certificate immediately.
