What is the California Food Handler Law?

The California Food Handler Law mandates that each retail food worker in the state receive a California Food Handler Card from an approved food handler training provider.

The California Food Handler Law originally referred to Senate Bill 602, which was signed into law in September 2010 by Gov. Schwarzenegger.  Senate Bill 602 had many flaws, including being anti-competitive in nature.  This is harmful to the public because it restricts higher quality training that can be offered at a more affordable rate.

In response to Senate Bill 602, StateFoodSafety.com and other voices in the industry exposed the anti-competitive behavior and frailties of the bill, and were very active in the task force charged with the creation of Senate Bill 303, the amendment to Senate Bill 602.

Senate Bill 303 is now the “California Food Handler Law” and can be read at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_303&sess=CUR&house=B&author=padilla.
