How to Get Certified: 
  • Create an account on the California RBS Portal to register. 
  • Within the portal, submit an application and pay the $3.00 application fee. Then write down your ID number found in the Server Certificate Details section. 
  • Search for online providers and click on the StateFoodSafety link to purchase the course.
  • Once you begin the StateFoodSafety course you'll be prompted to enter the Server Id Number.
  • Within 1-2 days after course completion you’ll receive an email notification from the CA RBS saying you may begin your exam. The state administered exam must be completed within 30 days of the date you completed the training.

The purpose of the alcohol training program is to prepare alcohol servers to enter the workforce by providing the required alcohol server information as specified by California regulations.

California Responsible Beverage Service Training - English FAQs

Is this StateFoodSafety alcohol certification training approved for my area? 

This training program matches the standards set in AB 1221 for all on premise alcohol servers and managers in California. 

Do I need alcohol training? 

If you are an alcohol server in California, you are required to complete an approved alcohol training course and pass the state administered online exam within 60 days of employment. 

When do I need to get my California Responsible Beverage Service Training and Exam? 

Assembly Bill 82 mandates that all on-premises alcoholic beverage servers and their managers must successfully complete an ABC approved training program and state administered exam no later than Aug. 31, 2022.  New employees must complete the training and exam within 60 days of hire. 

What do I get when I finish this course? 

A certificate of completion for the StateFoodSafety California Responsible Beverage Service Training.  

Are there any additional steps? 

Yes, after 24 hours of completing the training course you will receive an email from the ABC/RBS portal notifying you that your exam is ready. You must then successfully complete the exam in order to receive your digital certificate number. 

How do I renew my StateFoodSafety  California RBS Training certification? 

If your certificate ID Number has expired, you will need to purchase and retake the California  Responsible Beverage Service training and successfully pass the state administered exam.

Note: In some areas, you get your official Alcohol Server Certificate from the local health department. If you have lost the card you received from your state, county, or local health department, you will need to call that health department to obtain a new card, permit, or certificate.
